Design Capstone Project 11

In the quest to address pressing mental health concerns, innovation has become a beacon of hope. One such endeavor, which has taken root in New Zealand, is dedicated to empowering East Asian teenagers to 'Fight the Blue' – a mission to combat depression while respecting cultural sensitivities. The 'Develop' phase of this transformative project is where I turn this vision into a reality.

Choosing the Right Tools and Materials

A critical part of this phase is selecting the right tools and materials to create the proposed smart ring and mobile application. The rationale behind choosing a smart ring over a smartwatch is clear. Teenagers are drawn to accessories that are not just functional but also stylish and unique. A smart ring, in its subtle elegance, offers a discrete way to monitor physiological indicators related to depression. Its sleek design promises comfort and accessibility, qualities teenagers appreciate. I am committed to making technology a seamless part of their lives, something they don't just use but genuinely enjoy wearing.

Innovative Design with a Cultural Touch

The design process for the smart ring and mobile application is another exciting aspect of this project. Creating a visually appealing and culturally sensitive design is paramount. The color scheme, composed of soothing greens and blues, is intentionally chosen to invoke a sense of tranquility and harmony with nature. It's an essential element that fosters a welcoming atmosphere.

The ring design goes beyond aesthetics. It's not just an accessory; it's a statement. Careful attention is paid to materials, form factor, and colors that resonate with East Asian teenagers, making it a seamless part of their lifestyle. The ring's design isn't just about fashion; it's a symbol of empowerment, signaling to the wearer that they have a supportive tool right at their fingertips.

Collaboration and Expertise

Crafting the physical smart ring requires collaboration with experts in the field. I have reached out to a specialized ring-making company to bring the design to life. The process involves a meticulous approach, even changing the initial design from 6mm to 8mm to ensure that the engraved words are both legible and aesthetically pleasing. Each step is a testament to our dedication to creating a device that not only serves its technological function but also carries a profound emotional resonance.

User-Centric Approach

At the core of this 'Develop' phase is a user-centric approach. We're committed to making this solution not just effective but also a reflection of the user's needs and preferences. The design process is an iterative journey, guided by user feedback and testing. It's a continuous refinement that ensures our solution resonates with the East Asian teenagers we aim to support. It's all about making sure they feel heard, respected, and empowered.
